Effective performance management is critical to a business. Through formal and informal processes, it helps to align people, resources and services to meet strategy and corporate vision. It can support decision-making by providing early warning of risks or problems, and allow stakeholders to know when and where to make adjustments to keep deliveries on track. Organizations with proper performance management become successful, with staff "moving in the same direction" - to the best of their ability. Often, performance management systems are slow at best. Organisations are not functioning as efficiently or effectively as they could. In the worst case, they become bogged down in the day-to-day, and are unable to respond and bogged down due to un-tracked, un-coordinated business led change.

Strong performance management comes from "you cant manage something you don't measure". To succeed, businesses need to identify metrics and KPIs, aligned from its top-level strategic objectives down to the daily deliveries for each of its teams. By monitoring these metrics, teams can identify progress, how they will meet their objectives, and through continuous improvement, deliver the strategic vision.

Our recent experiences have shown clearly how simplfy having a Vision is not enough to meet complex competing pressures. KPIs aligned to business goals, are critical to people-process-technology change is key. Aligning the organisation delivery to its vision provides confidence and assurance that it will meet its obligations, effectively and with agility.
